Haptyk alternative for Mac: Kiiwi vs Haptyk

Updated October 2026. Details are checked against each app's own website.

Haptyk and Kiiwi both make your Mac keyboard sound like a mechanical one. Haptyk's idea is that the sound follows how hard you type. Kiiwi's idea is a library of named switches that you can hear in your browser before you pay, plus mouse and scroll sounds.

If you're comparing the two, here's the honest version, written by the person who makes Kiiwi.

Which Macs does Haptyk work on?

Haptyk reads typing force from an internal motion sensor that only some Apple silicon MacBooks have. Its terms list the supported models: the MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch (M1 Pro, M1 Max and later), the MacBook Air M2 and later, and the MacBook Pro 13-inch M2.

The same terms say the M1 MacBook Air, the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro, desktop Macs and Intel Macs don't have this sensor. If you have one of those, Haptyk shows an incompatible Mac notice when it opens.

Kiiwi doesn't depend on a sensor. It runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs on macOS 14 or later, including the M1 MacBook Air, the Mac mini, the Mac Studio and the iMac.

How they sound

Both apps play mechanical keyboard sounds as you type. Haptyk changes the volume and tone with how hard you press. Kiiwi plays the same named switch the same way every time, with spatial audio and separate press and release sounds on 22 of its 36 recordings.

The best way to decide is to listen. Type in the playground to hear Kiiwi's switches one after another, or open any switch in the switch library to type on it and hear every key.

Beyond the keyboard

Kiiwi also plays sounds for your mouse and trackpad, with 8 click packs and scroll wheel ticks. It counts your typing (keys per day, streaks, your best WPM, the apps you type in most) and turns your week into a share card. It only ever counts how many keys, never which ones.

Haptyk's pages don't list mouse sounds or typing stats.

Price and where to buy

Haptyk's site lists $8 once, with a 3-day free trial. Kiiwi is $4.99 once for its first 100 buyers, then $6.99, sold at kiiwi.app. Neither is a subscription. Both offer a 14-day refund.

Which should you pick?
